Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving
Picture a nation without drunk driving. MADD’s Campaign to EliminateDrunk Driving is a bold initiative with the ambitious, but attainable, goal ofeliminating drunk driving once and for all through the four comprehensive and coordinatedstrategies outlined below. The Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving kicked off in November 2006 with the goal of eliminating drunk driving permanently. The Campaign has four essential elements:
- High-visibility law enforcement, including sobriety checkpoints
- Ignition interlock devices for all convicted drunk drivers
- Advanced vehicle technologies that will prevent drunk driving
- Public support

The national
Drunk
Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. impaired driving crackdown is a
comprehensive impaired driving prevention program organized by the U.S.
Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) that focuses on combining high-visibility enforcement with heightened
public awareness through advertising and publicity. The national kick-off will
be held on August 16 and the campaign will run through September 4, 2006. This
year’s effort is supported by $11 million in paid national advertising to help
put everyone on notice that if they drive over the limit they will be arrested.

- In Virginia in 2006,
378 were killed in alcohol-related
crashes.
- In 2007, 30 teenagers died in drunk driving crashes in Virginia.
- In Virginia,
7,130 were injured in alcohol-related crashes in 2007 including 759 teenagers.
- In 2007, 28,787 persons were convicted of DUI in Virginia.

New Laws in Virginia provide the following penalties:
- Mandatory fine of at least $250 for 1st DUI.
- Mandatory fine of at least $500 for 2nd DUI in 5 years.
- Mandatory fine of at least $1,000 for 3rd DUI in 5 years.
- Mandatory 5 day in jail if Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is
.15 or higher.
- Mandatory 10 days in jail if Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is
.20 or higher.
- Mandatory 20 days in jail for 2nd DUI in 5 years.
- Mandatory 6 months in jail for 3rd DUI in 5 years.
- Your car can be permanently taken from you by the state on
your 3rd DUI
MADD Virginia relies on volunteers to:
- monitor court cases
- support victims
- educate the public about the dangers of drinking and
driving
- assist with getting prevention programs in schools
- help change the laws to deter drunk driving and underage
drinking
- work at designated driver booths at festivals and events
- support law enforcement in the their efforts to stop drunk
driving
- remind their friends and family not to drink and drive
MADD Programs
MADD's National Programs Department specializes in
developing and maintaining public awareness programs at the chapter,
state, and national level, involving the community as a whole in
supporting MADD's mission. The department continually looks for new ways
for MADD to reach a diverse population, with particular attention
focused on helping youth.
