Legislation 2008

HOUSE BILL 1442 is our highest priority during the 2008 Legislative Session.

The bill makes Ignition Interlocks mandatory for ALL persons convicted of DUI.

- Ignition Interlocks allow and offender to live and work with minimal inconvenience, while keeping our roads safer for all.

- First time offenders have driven drunk an average of 87 times before they get their first arrest.

- Interlock systems are proven to be 90% effective while the device is on the vehicle.

- There were 29,595 persons convicted of DUI in Virginia in 2006

- Approximately 15% of the convicted DUI offenders in Virginia have been required by the Court to install the Ignition Interlock in their car(s).

- An Ignition Interlock will not allow a car to start if the driver’s BAC is at or above the pre-set level of .02.

The following link is the version of the Ignition Interlock legislation passed by the Senate on March 4, 2008. Ignition Interlock Bill 2008 Senate Substitue
